An excellent analysis of the factors behind the onset and continuation of the deconstruction of the U.S. is set forth in a recent book -- The Fortunes of Permanence - Culture and Anarchy in an Age of Amnesia. The book is well worth reading as it does an excellent job of diagnosing our self-inflicted wounds and putting them in historical perspective. However, its author, Roger Kimball, is far more optimistic than I am about the possibility of a national and societal revival.
