Our Future Czar?

A Ballad for Our Congress

The Week Before Christmas

'Twas the week before Christmas, when Congress met,
So eager they were, to pile on the debt;
They knew it was wrong, deep down in their core,
But golly gee whiz, they must spend, spend some more;
With constituents distracted by holiday cheer,
Why, this was their chance, to spend more this year;
So the politicians huddled, they plotted, they planned,
$1 trillion, $2 trillion, how much could they scam?
And that’s when it happened, Reid and Pelosi stood up,
“What’s another $2 trillion, the voters are chumps!”
They raised the debt ceiling with nary a care,
And once that was done, they didn’t stop there;
More rapid than eagles, agendas were set,
They whistled and shouted, “No, we’re not done yet!”
“On health care, on taxes, on Carbon Cap-and-Trade,
“We’ll say it’s the rich, but everyone pays!”
“And for those who oppose us,” Reid and Pelosi insist,
“One call to the White House, you’re on the enemies list!”
And so they proceeded with their devilish plans,
Big government to all, constituents be damned.

Government and Big Bailout Recipient Join Forces To Again Pick Taxpayers' Pockets

Few people today will recall that Leona Helmsley, who was called the Queen of Mean, was jailed a couple of decades ago for publicly stating that "[o]nly the little people pay taxes."

Adding to the evidence of the accuracy Ms. Helmsley's statement provided by all the federal officials who for years prospered  by evading their income tax obligations is this Washington  Post report of the new deal struck by the government with one of its biggest bank bailout recipients. The special double deal will let the bank avoid paying taxes in an amount exceeding what it will cough up to repay with interest the bailout funds it received from the government. The government will claim a profit from the bailout repayment without mentioning the loss of even greater tax receipts from the bank. And the deal will free the bank's executives to grab whatever compensation they can get their board member lackeys to approve for the executives' contribution to the nation's financial meltdown.

As Tom Said to George: Better to Have and Not Need Them Than To Need But Not Have Them

"One loves to possess arms, though they hope never to have occasion for them."

. . . Thomas Jefferson, 1796
Letter to George Washington

A Grave Solution to Social Security Insolvency

Social Security, FDR's grand Ponzi scheme, was conceived as a plan to collect payroll tax from the nation's wage earners, who were expected to pay in and grow in number in perpetuity, and then die before reaping any significant benefits from the program.

As a result of medical and health benefits (from our supposedly defective private system), people now are living far longer than they did or were expected to do in the 1930s. At the same time, largely as a result of the government's flawed efforts to manage the economy, there are fewer employees supporting the increasing numbers of retirees.

Fear not though -- the government has a solution to save Social Security from the looming threat of insolvency. The solution is the current governmental effort to manage health care. Care will be mismanaged and rationed to quickly become death care,  This will ensure that people die before drawing any significant amount of benefits and thus enable the government to limit benefit expenditures that would necessitate replacing the payroll tax receipts that it already has spent elsewhere.

Problem solved . . . so no problem.

That's how things go when we drop "In God We Trust" and instead rely on, and trust the government.

Proven Again

The loony left is confirming the truth of the adage that "even a stopped clock is right twice a day." Although his reasoning is as demented as ever, Howard Dean now is urging Democratic senators to kill rather than enact Light Weight Harry Reid's secretly fashioned and repeatedly refashioned back room health care/health insurance reform bill.

Dear Nobody

An unexpected source has published a clear, accurate and realistic description of how the oligarchs who feast at the big public trough that is the clown house on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., actually view those whom they supposed represent. This eye opener is well worth reading.

However, as this report shows, their scornful view of their taxpaying supporters doesn't prevent them from sumptuous globe trotting,  living large (and ever larger)  at the expense of the public treasury.

Finally, for those who missed it, the oligarchs' minions on public payrolls now pull down paychecks and benefits averaging almost twice those of average Americans . . . and while a huge number of people are unemployed, the number of government employees has soared to record level and is continuing to climb. The tradition of having lower pay levels in exchange for the security of government jobs has been abandoned -- the growing number of bureaucrats with built in interests in ever larger government now share in the benefits of swelling and out of control public spending.

Here is the misery to which our rulers are taking us.

Why the Oligarchs Hate the Second Amendment

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States."

Worrisome Threats

This morning, from a cave somewhere in Afghanistan, Taliban Minister of Migration Mohammed Alibaba Ockmed warned the United States that if military actions against Iraq continues Taliban authorities intend to cut  off America 's supply of 7-11 Store and Motel 6 managers.

If this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next, followed by DELL, AT&T, and AOL customer service reps.

Finally, if all else fails, they have threatened not to send us any more presidential candidates either.

It's gonna get ugly, people . . . !

Behind the Warming Wizards' Curtain

Even though the curtain has been drawn back giving us a clear look at the machinations of the illusionists creating the global warming hustle, we're being told to ignore the trickery of the gang behind the scam -- reality is an unimportant detail, dwarfed by the sanctity of environmental ideology.

Climategate can be summed up quickly and easily:

*  The data upon which global warming claims are based are bogus, having been made up, manufactured, and spun out of fantasies.

*  Elitists who gain power, prestige, profits, or some combination of these things are behind the illusions and they are intent on continuing to do so. The gang includes scientists and academics corrupted by huge grants for toeing (and pushing) the line, opportunistic or gullible politicians who see the scare movement as a path to maintaining and increasing their power (as well as taxes), and our curiously unskeptical media.

*  In addition to staging the scary horror show for us, the same people also are cooperating in stifling and suppressing everything and everybody pointing out that the massive fraud is based entirely on fiction.

Before taking up the facts about the state of the earth's climate it is worth noting how those manipulating the warming extravaganza are responding to the exposure of their deceitful activities. They now are trying to divert public focus from their perfidy by besmirching those who pierced the deceptive propaganda curtain to give everyone a look at the ugly dishonesty of the manipulations behind it.

The fact is that the earth's climate is cyclical -- it constantly changes, going through periods of warming and period of cooling, and it always has done so.  There is little or no evidence that any human activity has any significant effect on these cycles. Constantly recurring changes in solar activity, wind and sea currants, and other natural phenomena appear to be the determinative factors in the cyclical variations.

Anyone who doubts this would do well to recall that there were times, extended periods of times, that large sections of the United States were covered with glacial ice.  There also were times that grapes, grasses and other warm weather flora flourished in Greenland and in Canada's Hudson Bay region.

Among the conceits of the climate change scanners are their delusional claims that they, or any  collection of human beings (i) can have a significant effect on the natural variations in the climate of the earth or even any of its regions, and (ii) know or have any rational basis for determining what temperatures or other climatic conditions are or would be most beneficial anywhere.

Sensible people will ignore the efforts to scare them into taking or permitting illogical and destructive measures, and go on leading their lives, enjoying the world as it is and the treasures that it gives us and allows us to enjoy.

A Holiday Conversion

Sister Mary Ann, who worked for a home health agency, was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients on Thanksgiving Day when she ran out of gas. As luck would have it, a Texaco Gasoline station was just a block away.

She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her that the only gas can he owned had been loaned out, but she could wait until it was returned. Since Sister Mary Ann was on the way to see a patient, she decided not to wait and walked back to her car.

She looked for something in her car that she could fill with gas and spotted the bedpan she was taking to the patient. Always resourceful, Sister Mary Ann carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with gasoline, and carried the full bedpan back to her car.

As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two Baptists watched from across the street.  One of them turned to the other and said,

"If it starts, I'm turning Catholic."

Israelis Baffled by News of Defenseless U.S. Soldiers

Many Israelis want to know: why didn't the soldiers attacked by a U.S. Army major-turned-terrorist return fire?   When a Muslim goes, well, Muslim in Israel he is typically shot to death by someone -- say, a reserve soldier -- within seconds of screaming "Allah Akbar."  In contrast with the Israeli experience, it took 10 minutes before a civilian police officer at Fort Hood was able to shoot and stop Muslim fanatic Nidal Malik Hasan.

How could that happen? How could so many people trained in the strategies and tactics of modern warfare be so defenseless?  The answer -- and this may astonish many Americans -- is that the victims were unarmed. U.S. Soldiers are not allowed to carry guns for personal protection, even on a 340-acre base quartering more than 50,000 troops.  So it goes in brain-dead, liberal America.

Fort Hood is a "gun free" zone, thanks to regulations adopted in one of the very first acts signed into law by anti-gun President Bill Clinton in March, 1993.

Contrary to President Obama's crocodile tears, his Islamist-appeasing administration is bent on further disarming the U.S. Military, and all Americans. Obama and his Communist crowd will not rest until every American is a sitting duck.

PS: Israeli teachers, from kindergarten on up, are also armed; so, a Virginia Tech-type slaughter is highly unlikely at an Israeli university.  Israelis, who have had to combat terrorism all their lives, are not afraid of guns. They are an armed people, ready, willing, and able to defend themselves and their country.   Unlike indoctrinated Americans, paralyzed by fear and political correctness, Israelis understand that people, not guns, kill people.

American Jews, for the most part, are nothing like their Israeli co-religionists. American Jews are disproportionately liberal and anti-gun. This is especially true of elitist, intellectual/professional Jews in Manhattan and the New York suburbs. They pride themselves in their masochistic, near-suicidal "tolerance" of Jew-haters and violent criminals.  The lessons of the Holocaust are lost on these Jews. They relish victimhood. Proud, tough Jews and proud, patriotic Americans make liberal Jews -- and liberals in general -- nervous.

Answer to Yuletide Question

The Sage of Baltimore Understood Government Perfectly

Government' consists of a gang, with no particular talent for the business of government, nor anything else for that matter. They do have talent, and lust, only for getting and holding political office.  Their principal device to that end is to seek out constituencies of weaklings who endlessly pant  and pine for something they can't quite seem to get, mainly because they're not  willing to work for it.

These constituencies are then promised, that what they think they want will be forcibly taken from those who rightfully own it and subsequently given to  them, even though they neither deserve it, nor have so much as lifted a finger  to earn it.  The process is little more than 'theft by proxy.'  The actual thieves are, as noted above, contemptible gasbags.  Recipients, when  they go along, become petty thieves themselves, are thus altogether stripped of  what little personal honor and dignity they may have once had.

Happily, nine times out of ten, those promises, like the prevaricators who make them, are worth nothing. The tenth time is made good only by looting the  productive in order to mollify the willfully unproductive.  In other words,  our 'government' is a broker in pillage, and every so-called 'election' is  little more than an auction of pilfered goods.

Avoiding Much Needed Scrutiny

As it became known that the government was aware that the murderous Fort Hood Jihadist in the past year had exchanged 10 to 20 e-mails with a radical imam in Yemen who was urging the killing of American troops, President Obama came out against any Congressional investigation of why that and many other equally unambiguous  danger signs were ignored.

Obama obviously is intent on avoiding any examination of how his liberal policies -- such as restraining the intelligence community and fostering political correctness in the military -- facilitated the Fort Hood  massacre. He certainly will do everything he can to prevent people from  focusing on how his administration failed to prevent and made possible the worst domestic terror attack in eight years,

Mighty Casey Strikes Out at the MIcrophone; Army Chief of Staff Should be Cashiered

Commenting on the massacre perpetrated by a Islamic Jihadist,  General George Casey, the Army's Chief of Staff said that "what happened at Fort Hood was a tragedy, but I believe it would be an even greater tragedy if our diversity becomes a casualty here."

Wonder about a couple of things -- such as how the mourning family members of the murderous Muslim's victims feel about the value placed on their relatives' lives by their commander. Also have to wonder who would willingly serve, or allow any of their kids to serve under such a politically correct general.

Perhaps we should be grateful that General Casey revealed the relatively little weight that he places on the lives of the soldiers who were slain by the rampaging terrorist. He clearly is more devoted to the ephemeral concept of diversity than he is to the well being of those under his command. Having displayed those relative priorities and the wretched judgment behind them, the general proved himself unfit for the position he holds. He should be relieved forthwith and never again allowed to command troops.

A (Necessarily Anonymous) LEO's Comments on Our Gun Free Venues

"Many in our [federal law enforcement] agency have been piously critical of the lack or preparedness at Fort Hood.

"However, when one goes to our academy for in-service training, he [or she] is asked at the gate if he [or she] is armed.  When we answer in the affirmative, we are instructed to 'secure' all weapons and ammunition in one of their storage lockers immediately.  Possession of a firearm on campus (aside from transporting an unloaded weapon to and from ranges) is prohibited. The academy  staff obviously doesn't trust any of us with guns.

"Of course, any sensible professional who carries daily and has even a modicum of self-respect, ignores such demeaning and preposterous rules, with utmost disdain!

"For one, I remain armed, there and everywhere else, in contemptuous defiance of their 'rules.'

"We Feds dare not criticize Fort Hood's 'gun-free' policy, because we, due to cowardice, paranoia, and stupidity, exercise the same delusional mentality, for  the same reason.

"We don't even trust each other!"

Comment: Once again, so long as we have paranoid/delusional/political  'managers,' far more interested in keeping their jobs than they ever will be in doing them, we won't need enemies!

Another Example of Government Protection

Below are excerpts from an Oakland Tribune report that again raises questions about (i) why was this guy permitted to be running around loose, and (ii) how many people is he going to be permitted to kill before we exterminate him or keep him locked up for life (his and ours):

BERKELEY — An Oakland man who served time in prison for killing a 3-year-old child 15 years ago was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with the death of a woman whose battered body was found at Aquatic Park early this morning.

Curtis Martin, 38, was arrested by veteran west Oakland beat Officer Keith Dodds after Berkeley police notified surrounding agencies that they were looking for Martin as a suspect in the killing.

     *     *     *
Martin has a criminal record dating back to the early 1990s.

In February 1994, Martin was arrested in the beating death of 3-year-old Devin Brewer, of Oakland, the son of his girlfriend at the time. The child died at an Oakland hospital the day after Martin took him for a haircut and returned him bruised and swollen.

Martin claimed the boy had fallen at the park.

He originally was charged with murder but was allowed to plead no contest to voluntary manslaughter in exchange for 11 years in prison, authorities confirmed Friday. He was out of prison by 2000 because he was given credit for time served.

In 2008, he was arrested for violating a court order to prevent domestic violence. He was never prosecuted.

At the time of the boy's slaying, Martin was on parole for robbery and previously was convicted of armed robbery, burglary and weapons violations.

Under Attack and Steadfastly Oblivious and Supine

America is under relentless attack by an adversary determined to subjugate or kill every last one of us. Yet our leaders are in complete denial, refusing to acknowledge what is transpiring,  and committed to not fighting back.

The Fort Hood massacre by the most recent Jihadist attacker didn't bother to conceal his commitment to the Islamist cause before commencing his murderous assault any more than  did his Muslim predecessors on September 11, 2001. All of them and their many others coreligionist attackers justifiably counted on the ineptness and unwillingness of our government to interfere with their plans . . . and thus to continue to fail -- and to fail spectacularly -- in the protection of American citizens.  None of these killers was the least bit stealthy and all could, and would have been thwarted by any one of a number of government agencies had those agencies not been uniformly inept and totally lacking in any semblance of vigilance.

No matter that providing such protection is the overriding rationale for the existence of government. It is more than slightly ironic that even though our government continues to fail in discharging this first and foremost obligation, and to ruin, at great expense, everything it touches, it continues to expand its authority over, and to divert its attention to secondary and even trivial matters.

Consider a president who instantly labels as stupid the actions of a police officer in Cambridge, Massachusetts, even though he admits knowing little about the incident he was addressing, but warns against any rush to judgment about a massacre perpetrated on an Army base by a heavily armed murderous Muslim screaming "Allahu Akbar."

Consider too an Army chief of staff who responds to the deaths or 13 individuals and the wounding of 30 others at Fort Hood  by repeatedly stating that it would be an even greater tragedy  if "diversity" were to be a casualty of this most recent outrage. Nor is this an isolated example of our failed leadership -- it was not long ago that the chief of naval operations stated that "diversity" was the Navy's primary mission. Can't help but wonder where the lives and well being of those serving under them are in the list of priorities of these commanders.

Perhaps it is that I am old, out-of-date, cantankerous, and funny or odd, but, begging your pardon, I continue to hold to the view that prevailed in the long gone days of my youthful military service: Protecting and defending the Constitution, the nation and the American people, and defeating our enemies is and always must be the supreme and overriding mission of our armed services and their leaders . . . up to and including the Army's chief of staff, the chief of naval operations, and the commander in chief.

Instead, all of our current crop of posturing and pretentious pseudo leaders, with the aid and cheerleading support of our mostly mindless media, are paralyzed by political correctness. Such self indulging conceits ensure that we in the future will suffer more such attacks.

Our Rulers Are Doing Just Great, Taking Care of Themselves While Screwing the Rest of Us

2010 is right around the corner, tell your friends to vote these arrogant thieves out of office. We need to start over.

The members of Nasty Nancy Pelosi's House of Ill Repute and the United States Sty voted themselves $4,700 and $5,300 raises for 2010 and 2011.

They voted against giving Social Security recipients any cost of living raise in those years. Therefore those on Social Security will not be getting the normal 3% ($660 a year) cost of living adjustment although their Medicare premiums will go up $285.60 for the two years. Thus they will lose at least $1,600 (or $3,200 for husband and wife) in 2010 and 2011.

Meanwhile, over the same two-year period each member of the House of Reprehensibles and the Upper House of Gasbags will be taking home a $10,000 in pay raises.

Do you feel SCREWED yet?

Will they have our drug costs, doctor fees, local taxes, food and other cost increases?

NO WAY . They have their raises and better benefits. Why care about us? We never did anything about it in the past so they obviously count on us continuing to be too stupid or uncaring to hold them to account.

Do you really think that Nasty Nancy Pelosi, Light Weight Harry Reid, Chris Dodd, Charlie Rangel, Barney Frank, et al, care about us? SEND THEM A YOU'RE FIRED MESSAGE!

IN 2010 WE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO GET RID OF THE SITTING CONGRESS: Up to one third of the Sty and all of the Reprehensibles.

MAKE SURE YOU'RE STILL MAD IN NOVEMBER 2010 AND THEN REMIND THEIR REPLACEMENTS NOT TO SCREW UP.

Union Goons Ignored As Dems Deride Beating Victim

Long after purple shirt-wearing SEIU goons beat up conservative activist Kenneth Gladney outside a Missouri health care town hall meeting, not much has happened.

Almost three months after the incident the wheels of justice are spinning VERY slowly, Glenn Beck said on his TV show earlier this week.

Mike Flynn, editor of BigGovernment.com, said
the incident happened August 6th. Charges were filed. Gladney went to the hospital. Immediately, the Democrats brought in a high-powered attorney to defend the SEIU thugs who were charged with assault and it just kind of disappeared.
Flynn noted that the case has “disappeared within the jurisdictions of those individuals who are part of Buffy Wicks’s truth squad.”

Flynn is referring to Wicks, now deputy director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. As the leader of the Obama campaign in Missouri, Wicks organized an “Obama truth squad.” Flynn said she
organized at the Obama campaign headquarters a press conference of law enforcement officials, prosecuting attorneys, strict attorneys at the campaign headquarters who issued a warning that they would prosecute rival campaigns for any what they saw as misleading statements from their campaign.
Wicks also helped to oversee the infamous National Endowment for the Arts teleconference in August in which the Obama administration openly encouraged artists to produce pro-Obama art as political propaganda.

Naturally, the left has responded with vicious attacks on the victim, a diminutive black man with diabetes. Perhaps in the eyes of leftists Gladney hasn’t learned his “place” in society.

Watertiger at firedoglake calls Gladney “Joe the Dumber” and describes him as a “teabagging wingnut who tripped and fell while getting in the face of an SEIU member.”

Wndycty at Democratic Underground calls Gladney a “fraud” and a “fool.”

TBogg mocked Gladney and his injuries, calling him a “Teabagging Drama Queen,” and adding, “If the teabagging people weren’t such rage-filled imbeciles they would be the most adorable slow children on earth.”

Bronte17 at the Daily Kos far left hate site refers to Gladney as a “‘Don’t Tread on Me’ dork” and as ” a mouthy dork in a dark tan polo.” (That sounds a lot like “uppity” black, doesn’t it?) The blogger also suggests Gladney is suing SEIU because it has deep pockets. “[H]mmm… wonder if they think union money is easy pickin’?”

Oliver Willis who works for the George Soros-backed slime factory Media Matters for America, inverts the perpetrator-victim relationship calling  Gladney “the black conservative who is the current poster boy for the thug right.” Willis can’t get the sequence right on his blog’s tagline either, “Like Kryptonite To Stupid.”

Wonkette derided Gladney as “the biggest whore in history. Like 100 times more whorish than Joe the Plumber and the world’s entire collection of actual street-walking prostitutes combined.”

Tolerating Everything; Standing For Nothing

More than a dozen young males, ranging in age from the early to late teens recently spent several hours gang raping a young girl whom they grabbed either on or just off a Richmond, California, high school campus where she and many of them had attended a school dance. Many others saw what was transpiring, watched for a bit, and went their various ways without doing anything to stop the atrocity that was taking place. No one even bothered to call the authorities until another girl who had heard about what was happening from one of the witnesses telephoned the police.

The perpetrators, none of whom are the least bit remorseful, now are facing, and will be tried on a multitude of criminal charges. They will be tried, convicted, and sentenced to various terms in prison, and eventually will be let out on parole . . . to commit more violent crimes.

Any doubts about that?

If you have any, think about the parolee who in 1991 kidnapped an 11-year-old girl and then held her captive for 18 years in a backyard compound at his home  in a suburban California community, periodically raping her and fathering  children to whom she gave birth . . . despite periodic visits by probation and parole inspectors who failed to notice anything wrong despite numerous warnings to the authorities from neighbors that things were amiss.

Also take a look at the criminal backgrounds of the members of the group that in 2007 kidnapped Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom in Tennessee, and then held them captive, tortured, raped, and then murdered them in another horrible incident. Because the victims of this outrage were a young and attractive white couple while the perpetrators are black, it went unreported by our media -- the same that went to great lengths to provide every detail of a rape that never happened in order to blacken the reputations of wrongfully accused Duke athletes.

What about the parolee who murdered four Oakland police officers after being freed from prison even though the authorities recognized that he was an incorrigible violent criminal?

The inescapable conclusion is that our society is rotting from within. We no longer believe strongly enough, or have sufficient faith in an any values strongly enough to defend them.  If we did, we would exterminate vermin who commit atrocities such as those outline above, permanently removing them from our midst . . . and while we were doing so we also would remove from any position of authority those responsible for letting such creatures loose on the rest of us.

Is it any wonder that we cannot maintain our leadership position in the world when we lack the faith and strength necessary to defend ourselves and our society?

Perhaps the Obama administration is a symptom rather than the cause of our problems.

A Declining America

Everywhere one looks these days there are clear signs that America is declining both economically and as a world power.

The always clear headed Victor Davis Hanson offers this analysis of the overall situation.

A more detailed explanation of our bleak economic prospects was spelled out by Niall Ferguson, the economist author of The Ascent of Money in a recent appearance on the Charlie Rose program. Here is the transcript of what here had to say about where we're headed, what the future holds, and why.

And the dangers to which the current administration's foreign policy -- based on childish fantasies and wishful thinking -- are exposing the nation are spelled out in this assessment by the estimable John Bolton.

Can You Handle This Legislative Monster? Keep a Barf Bag Handy

Go here if you've got a strong enough stomach take a look at the health care 'reform' monstrosity that the House of Reprehensibles voted to inflict on us.

More on Our Gunshy Warriors: Learned Helplessness in the Military

Had Wednesday's serial murders at Ft Hood taken place just outside the Base in the City of Killeen, TX, the murder suspect would likely have been gunned-down immediately by several Texas CHL holders.

Tragically, the murders took place in a "gun-free zone" (aka "criminal empowerment zone"), because in America, among those claiming to be active members of the "Profession of Arms," no one is armed!

Reaction from the idiot Press were predictable:

They sought out anyone who would comment on the subject of personal weapons on base.  One representative fell into their trap and tried to defend Base rules that require  ". . . anyone on Base with a weapon must have it out-of-reach and unloaded."  However, as we all know, any gun that is  "perfectly safe" is "perfectly useless," and its owner is "perfectly useless."

Base commanders apparently believe everyone should be disarmed and always ready to be victimized, rather than (Heaven forbid!) armed, trained,  and prepared.

Interesting philosophy, and it obviously "worked" perfectly!  Curious that the murder suspect himself apparently didn't pay much attention to that particular rule.  Imagine that!

The fact is that the best, and only really effective, deterrent to criminal violence is good and decent people who are constantly armed and prepared. That practice has significantly discouraged all criminal activity every time it  has been tried.

It works.  Nothing else does!

Years ago, in all branches of the US Military, officers and staff NCOs were always armed with a pistol, on base, off base, in uniform, or not.  Being ever "armed and ready" was considered a point of honor!  To be unarmed was to be incapable of performing one's duty.  Such a thing would be dishonorable.  Back then, we didn't have mass murders on military  bases!

Under today's "enlightened" policy, even star-wearers are unarmed and helpless, foolishly relying upon some ill-defined "reactionary force" to protect  them, a force that will predictably arrive long after the damage has been  done.  Who own personal weapons, have local CCW permits, and acquire
training outside the "System," are now classified as "gun-enthusiasts" and are  thus highly suspect from that point forward, lumped in with lepers and child-molesters.

So long as professing practitioners of the "Profession of Arms" are pathologically frightened of guns and suspect of each other, we can look forward to more such mass murders of the defenseless.  And, I promise you, all will take place in "gun-free zones."

As always, the real villain here is arrogance, the kind of personal vanity the ever precludes us from sincerely admitting we're wrong and that we need to  change directions.

Learned helplessness?  Not a formula for victory!

The above is from John S. Farnam, one of America's preeminent defensive shooting, and personal and family safety/security instructors.

Thoughts on Our Gun Free Military Occasioned by the Fort Hood Massacre

Our military bases are like the Virginia Tech campus -- gun free zones.

The bases are made so by officers concerned that their path to future promotions may be jeopardized if they are criticized for any accident(s) that might be attributed to allowing those who pursue what used to be a profession of arms to actually be armed.

I recall a time that all officers -- noncoms as well as commissioned -- carried arms at all times. Now we have a typical military commander in Alaska prohibiting those under him from carrying arms even off duty and notwithstanding that they have state permits to carry concealed weapons.

These careerist commanders who are afraid of guns have lots of blood on their hands and much for which to account . . . although in our politically correct world they are unlikely to ever be called to account.

Democrat Leader's Rx for Tyrannical Government

In attempting to explain the authority for the proposed health care legislation's requirement that individuals purchase health care insurance, Rep. Steny Hoyer last week claimed that Congress could require people to buy a great many things on the basis of the Constitution's reference to the "general welfare."

This creates a quandary. It long has been recognized that the reference does not confer any authority or power on the federal government as the "general welfare" is mentioned only as a purpose of the Constitution. So one has to wonder about a great many things, such as:

* Why, if  the mention of the general welfare is all Congress needs as a basis for any action it wishes to take, did the founders bother going to all the trouble to enumerate in detail the specific powers the Constitution confers on the government's various branches?

* Why does the Constitution provide that any and all powers not enumerated and specifically conferred on the federal government are reserved to the states and the people?

Now Mr. Hoyer is not just any member of the House of Reprehensibles. He is its majority leader and thus second in the body's hierarchy, only to its squeaker, Nasty Nancy Pelosi, who, incidentally, has made similar bogus claims.

So one is compelled to wonder whether we are being led by people who are crazy, dishonest, evil, ignorant, stupid, or some combination of all of these things.

Whatever the answer, the idea that Congress has the power to impose on the country anything that a majority of its members deems to be (or can pass off as being) in furtherance of the general welfare is antithetical to the concept of a limited government. The idea would justify an unlimited government of men not laws . . . and therefore a tyrannical government.

Dismissing Government: Let Me Try to Count the Reasons

Why, a new visitor to this blog has inquired, am I so dismissive of government?

I won't try to count the reasons, but I will mention just two or three based on matters currently in the news.

At the national level we currently are witnessing the inability of the federal government to come up on a timely basis with a sufficient quantity of the swine flu vaccine to inoculate all the citizens who should and want to be immunized against the disease.

Locally, in the San Francisco Bay Area we are seeing our transportation system grinding almost to a halt, paralyzed by the failure of a fix to one of its key components. A Labor Day weekend fix to the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge yesterday turned out to have a seven week shelf life before falling apart. As the fix had to be approved by the engineering experts as well as the executives in charge of the governmental infrastructure, one has to question their competence and the safety of all of our tunnels, bridges, and roadways -- every component of the transportation system for which they are responsible.

That's at the micro level. At the macro level, it is noteworthy that the failure of that single component has had such widespread devastating effects on the overall transportation system and the economy of the region. Everything has slowed to something less than a crawl. The lack of redundancy is startling. For a fraction of the economic effects of the breakdown, we could and should long ago have built a southern crossing of the bay that has been talked about -- and only talked about -- for decades. No matter though -- Even if a decision were to be made to construct a southern crossing bridge or tunnel, given the way that things work these days, it probably would take another two or three decades to build it, and that would be after all the political and litigation delays were resolved.

What would happen were a similar breakdown to occur during a real emergency?

And these are the people and organizations that want to take over our health care.

The Organizational Imperative

Last week's NRA shocker -- see the October 16 post on this subject -- brought home to me that organizations exhibit protective instincts similar to those we see in living organisms.  They all seek to thrive, prosper, and, above all, to survive.

However, in contrast to living organisms, which all have natural life spans, organizations seek perpetual existence . . . and this explains why those that purport to be goal oriented do not in fact want to achieve complete success. Achievement of the professed goal can devastate those who thrived and prospered while seeking it.

Remember the March of Dimes? Back in the days of my youth it was everywhere, collecting money to combat polio. It supported treatment of the disease and research into a cure for it. The organization almost died when a vaccine eliminated the dreaded disease. It frantically thrashed about looking for another cause.  Ultimately, it survived by finding other diseases to combat but those diseases are less widespread and less feared and the organization faded into a shadow of its once omnipresent former self.

Just think about the civil rights campaigns led by Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Does anyone believe that those hustlers would wave their hands if by doing so they could eliminate all vestiges of slavery and discrimination, and bring their black followers to full economic and social equality with their white contemporaries?

The organizational imperative is to maintain its raison de'etre in perpetuity.

It therefore behooves us to examine the actions of every socially active organization in light of this organizational imperative.

Hispanic organizations have sought and continue to seek bilingual programs in our schools. How much of this is due to fear of Hispanics becoming assimilated into the larger English speaking society? Do they not have an interest in maintaining a support group of individuals bound (and limited) by language to a separate subculture?

The National Rifle Association provides another example of the subject phenomena. It campaigns for the preservation of the rights of Americans to keep and bear arms. If it had the capability to do so, would it eliminate all legal restrictions on the right of Americans to own, carry, and use any and all arms that they wished? Perhaps it would as the NRA does many very worthwhile things in addition to its activities in the legal arena. But it is the perpetual threat to gun rights that brings in the big bucks that sustains the organization and allows it and its leaders to live large.

The lesson drawn from these examples is that to perpetually survive, thrive, and prosper an organization should (i) work for a goal or goals that are not fully achievable or never will be fully achieved, (ii) strive to achieve limited but observable and, preferably but not necessarily, real gains toward such goal or goals, and (iii) regularly present to its supporters credible enemies and threats to previously achieved and/or future gains and to maintaining even the status quo

None of this is inherently wrong or undesirable. But the organizational imperative is something we should keep in mind and consider in evaluating the activities of any and all activist groups.

What Change Means

Change under the Obama administration is the dismantling of America as Thomas Sowell point out in this excellent column.

Dithering Is Deadly

More than 50 days have passed since Obama's personally selected commander in Afghanistan said a surge in the number of American troops was necessary to avoid defeat there in what Obama himself called a good and necessary war.

While the President has had ample time since then to engage in a broad range of far less serious -- and some would say frivolous -- matters, he has been and at this writing remains unable or unwilling to reach a decision on the call for reinforcements from his commander in the field. Every passing day without the requested build up in strength, adds to the dangers that our troops on the ground face and the prospects for ultimately being able to succeed in their mission diminishes. Keep in mind that the commanding general, in calling for additional troops, said that their early deployment was essential.

Perhaps President Obama is delaying a decision to avoid antagonizing,  and to get the health care reform  votes of his leftist allies who are opposed to the Afghanistan effort, or to delay the criticism of conservatives if he turns down the request for more troops.

Whatever the reason, the delay is unconscionable, and if political considerations are behind it, the delay is particularly shameful. As commander in chief the president doesn't have the luxury of voting present as he did when facing tough decisions as a legislator.

Delaying a decision is itself a decision of sorts -- it's a decision to leave the members of our inadequate force twisting in an increasingly dangerous wind in a conflict that has been under resourced from the outset. We need to get on with what it takes to win or get our soldiers out of harms way altogether . . . and the decision needs to be made now.

The Incredible Shrinking Dollar

In 1920, an American $20 bill, a 20-dollar gold piece, and a good quality man's suit all were of equal value. Any one of them could be exchanged for either of the other two.

A 20-dollar gold piece today still will buy a fine man's suit.

The $20 bill won't cover the cost of having the suit cleaned and pressed.

Think about it.
