The GOP: Party Without a Purpose

Republicans are going to have a hard time crafting a thematic message. Are they going to run claiming:

"We are for maximizing individual responsibilities and rights, and minimizing the size and scope of, and spending by government -- reducing its intrusiveness and costs . . . and this time we mean it. Trust us."

Republicans pose as conservatives when running for election. In office, they enjoy spending our tax dollars every bit as much as, and perhaps even more than Democrats. They relish the ability to raid the public treasury in efforts to buy constituencies to perpetuate their tenure.

It won't wash with me. I bought into it big time in the past, but won't be taken in again.

Just look at the $300 billion bill Farm Bill that passed Wed. that raises farm subsidies and is loaded with pork. A majority of Senante and House Republicans voted for a bill that raises spending 44 percent above last year's bill. The President (Bush) was just as ambivalent and went so far (behind closed doors) to imply that it was all right for members to "vote their districts", "that is, if the "aggies" supported the bill". This message was alleged to have been reported to his colleagues by Rep. Goodlatte of Virginia, ranking Republican on the House Agriculture Committee. And in the
Senate, Republican Leader Mitch McConnell not only supported the farm bill but earmarked a tax provision benefiting house farms in his home state of Kentucky.

Meanwhile, Iraq has Billions of unused dollars in oil revenues.

Come to think of it, why is it that we still need to spend billions on farm subsidies, what with the price of commodies, supply and demand and the need for jobs. It seems that farmers should be encouraged to farm 24/7.

I know this is off the "Post" purpose, but I just don't understand. Maybe someone can explain this to me in simple language.
