Our World Is a Dangerous Place . . . and That's Nothing New

Terrorism may be shattering widespread illusions of safety and security in western societies,  awakening comfortably somnolent  populations, and forcing them to see the world as it actually is -- a dangerous place with violence and threats of violence a normal, consistent, constant, and enduring aspect of the human condition.

So relax . . . but do so while staying alert.  Also, keep in mind that every individual is his or her own first responder with primary responsible for his or her own survival. No matter what governmental authorities may tell you, your life and well being are not as important to them or to anyone else as they are to you. Government wants you to be dependent on it and its agents, but, as the saying accurately has it, when seconds count, help is just minutes away . . . or perhaps even hours, days, weeks, months, or years.

A few useful tips on how to counter terrorist and other human threats of violence can be gleaned from this essay and the materials to which it provides links.
