Terrorism may be shattering widespread illusions of safety and security in western societies, awakening comfortably somnolent populations, and forcing them to see the world as it actually is -- a dangerous place with violence and threats of violence a normal, consistent, constant, and enduring aspect of the human condition.

Government wants you to be dependent on it and its agents, but, as the saying accurately has it, when seconds count, help is just minutes away . . . or perhaps even hours, days, weeks, months, or years.
