This morning's newspapers carried reports about gargantuan increases in the San Francisco Bay Area's bridge tolls that will take effect on July 1.
Being an old -- pardon the expression -- fart, I remember the solemn pledges that were made when construction of the bridges was proposed. Modest tolls would pay off the bonds that were sold to finance the construction. No tolls would be charged and use of the bridges would be free once the bonds were paid off.
Prompting this challenge: Tell me about the temporary government fee, charge, tax, etc., that actually ended when and as promised at the time it was instituted.
