On Politicians From Texas

The entry of Texas Gov. Rick Perry  into the race for the Republicon presidential nomination led me to reflect on political leaders that Texas has produced. Four immediately sprang to mind.

Two of them -- Sam Houston and Sam Rayburn -- were highly capable and decent, good, and even admirable individuals.

George W. Bush was and is very good and decent person, a caring, kind, gracious, and generous one. He's also gives every indication of being a really good guy with whom any time spent probably would be highly enjoyable. However, as a president he was by and large a disappointment, if not a  disaster.

Lyndon Johnson on the other hand was a very talented politician and leader.  But he was neither a decent nor a good  person. In fact he was a crude, oafish, and vulgar individual who often acted as a selfish and greedy embodiment of evil.

In light of this history, I am inclined to limit my support of politicians coming out of Texas to those who are named Sam. Nonetheless, I'd probably make an exception to enthusiastically get behind a taciturn candidate named Calvin or Cal irrespective of from whence he hailed . . . and especially if he were to emerge from Vermont.
